About Us
The Federal College of Land Resources Technology, Kuru-Jos (formerly known as the Federal Soil Conservation School) was established in 1968 by Decree 12. It was initially sited at Katsina, but later moved to Jos due to the prominence of mining activities on the Plateau, which was rapidly degrading the land.
The College, which was jointly administered by the Federal Government and USAID, commenced academic activities for Agricultural Instructors in Soil and Water Conservation on 3rd March, 1969. The administrative supervision of the College was under the Department of Land Resources & Climate Change Management Services of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development until 30th September, 2021.
With the coming into force of the Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria (Amendment) Act 2021 on 30th September, 2021, the management of the College was brought under the control of the Council. The Act also empowered the College to establish spin-off companies as a platform for commercializing agricultural innovation and findings.
The mandates of the College currently include training middle level manpower for the agricultural sector, particularly in land resources inventory, management and conservation, agricultural extension and socio-economics, agricultural technology, survey and geo informatics, entrepreneurship development, and soil management; development and organization of short-term courses in all aspects of agriculture; and carrying out soil advisory services to corporate bodies and individuals, among others. The physical address of the College is along Vom Road, Opposite the National Institutes for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru, Plateau State, Nigeria. The GPS coordinates of the College is 479309.707E 1075720.173N.
In the recent past, there has been the need to protect the Nigerian environment from the threats of degradation arising principally form soil erosion and flooding. This led the Federal Government of Nigeria to approve in 1980 the establishment of Federal College of Land and Resources Technology, Kuru (FECOLART, Kuru).
The gesture is to train junior and intermediate personnel in order to participate in the arduous task of checking our ubiquitous land degradation problems and thereby ensuring sustainable agricultural production while conserving the soil.
The College Programmes presently cut across the humanities and natural sciences, education and environmental sciences as well as agricultural engineering technology. The array will expand as the college’s infrastructural, personal and didactic capabilities increase.
Federal College of Land Resources Technology, Kuru (FECOLART) was approved by the federal Government in the 1981-1985 4th National Development Plat to supplement an already existing sister college at Kuru Plateau State in the areas of service and training in soil conservation and management in the humid forest ecological zone.
